I just took part in a conversation about vision loss/hearing loss as age comes on. One man lamented about being unable to read the labels on shampoo labels in the shower, and constantly trying to wash his hair with his wife's conditioner. Others complained about ineffective hearing aids and their cost. I can't read the shampoo labels either, and newsprint gets smaller every year, though so far I only need glasses for reading. As for hearing, none of those exceedingly expensive hearing aids helps all that much (in addition to which they rip us off on the price) and I undergo much badgering from my wife to get something better and never mind the cost. In my experience there is nothing better out there. If you are interested in some of my other observations, 1. hearing loss is principally a male disease; 2. TV sets have uniformly lousy sound, never sharp, never pure, however much you paid for it; 3. any show recorded in Britain is much worse, almost (to me) undecipherable, much of the dialogue a blur, as if they are recording on inferior machines, or at different cycles or frequencies from ours; and 4. living in France much of the time becomes harder and harder. I used to think I spoke French perfectly, or almost perfectly, but more and more I can't understand the television, or even, often, what people say to me. And French movies, for me, are a thing of the past. I blame my hearing loss on hanging over roaring race cars for 7 or 8 years when I was younger but my brother, once a navy carrier pilot with his head against jet engines, hears much better than I do. I search for answers, has anybody got any?
