Yes there are strikes. There was one two days ago. In France there are always strikes. France, it has often been said, is governed from the streets. The people manifest, the government takes notice, and most often it caves in. I wish it stood fast more often than it does. But the French way may make more sense than the American way. I remember when a million American mothers marched against the Vietnam War. Had no effect on the government whatever. As I remember it, the war continued another five years.
